Cambridge City Council has an exciting role for an experienced Housing Benefit Officer to join our Revenues and Benefits Service.
As the successful candidate you will have proven housing benefit experience/knowledge that can be applied to our new post. Your duties for this post will be dealing with Housing Benefit overpayments.

You will be required to review decisions made by the Assessment Team and ensure the correct decision has been made to allow appropriate recovery of overpaid Housing Benefits via a number of means.

You must have excellent communication skills as you will deal with vulnerable or difficult customers, some may have the means to repay and do not wish to and others may not have the means to pay. Most communications are by phone so clear and firm but fair manner is needed.
Your knowledge must be to a standard that you will be to provide colleagues internally and external partners with expert advice and interpretation of legislation, circulars and guidance on Housing Benefits and the recovery of overpayments. Full on the job training will be given to familiarise yourself with our overpayment recovery procedures.

You will need to be educated to GCSE level, holding a grade C or above in Maths and English, or equivalent. You will have excellent IT skills, with knowledge of Northgate Revenue and Benefits computer and document management systems. You will have excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to deal with customer queries effectively.

For the right candidate/s we will consider a job share and after a period of 3 months, some home working will be considered.
