We are now in an exciting period of significant transformation in the County. The Secretary of State, James Brokenshire has announced his decision for the future of local government in Northamptonshire. The Government has decided to replace all eight councils in Northamptonshire with two brand new unitary authorities.

We are therefore looking for an experienced practitioner to join the Chief Executive’s Office as Senior Lawyer and Deputy Monitoring Officer, reporting to General Counsel. This position will have a key role to play in the formation of any future authorities, as well as helping to rebuild the County Council’s existing governance and corporate discipline.

We are looking for someone with significant experience of working at a senior level, who has a thorough understanding of Local Government Law and the legislative framework governing the operation of local authorities and public sector bodies more generally. You will have the ability to influence on legal issues to secure desired outcomes by earning the trust and confidence of officers and elected members. You will have strong analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to manage large complex and a varied workload within a complex and political environment. You will also have experience of deputising as the Council’s Monitoring Officer and of advising in relation to matters of Corporate governance including inter-company relations and legal structures.

In return we offer a competitive salary of £48,841 – 60,071 per annum, annual leave entitlement of 27 days, (plus bank holidays), access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, and fantastic offices situated in the heart of Northampton. The post is fixed term for 18 months.
